The North Pond

Reconnecting with family and nature

The owners wanted to reimagine their weekend home as a retreat where they could entertain family and friends during visits and holidays. It had to be comfortable and inviting, but also modern.

Invariably, guests gravitate towards the kitchen because it is the room where everyone feels comfortable, so we improved the open concept, integrating the exterior porch into the spacious layout, and making the home a true idyllic family-time getaway.

Solutions

The entire first floor was remodeled with a transitional, open feel that allowed fluid communication between spaces:

  • To expand the kitchen and create a wall of glass, we removed a supporting wall and reinforced the ceiling with steel beams.
  • We removed the walls to the formal dining room and expanded the kitchen to include a sitting area
  • A wall of glass was added opposite the kitchen counters, calling attention to the outside and creating a bright and airy setting.
  • To transform the entertainment area into a clean, open space with rooms that blend into each other, we added a covered porch with automatic screens adjacent to the kitchen/dining area.

  • An outdoor patio was constructed next to the new family nook for seamless traffic flow from multiple outdoor and indoor spaces.
  • An 18-foot sliding bifold door was installed to integrate the exterior and the interior.

The second floor was altered to make room for more bedrooms. We converted the unfinished attic into sleeping areas for all the kids, giving them a space they could call their own.
