Modern Lake House Remodel

We need a short grabber

We envisioned bright spaces opening the house to connect to the natural environment.

Modern lake House was such a special project. Built in the 70s, lakeside, on a rocky peninsula and in a bucolic woodland setting. The residence was originally designed by Architect Ken Miller in 1971, as the weekend retreat of actors Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. The present-day Owners of the property hired us to design a modern residence where the 1970s contemporary home existed. All at once inspiring and challenging.

For the new Owners, the property was a connection to fond childhood memories and the serenity of a woodland setting. It held the promise of a counterweight to their busy, professional lives in the City. The home was in much disrepair and needed a fresh remodel to realize the dream.

They hired us to realize that dream, we envisioned bright spaces opening the house to connect to the natural environment.

Interior Solutions

  • Removed loft and redesigned that wing of the home with a flat roof and upper level clerestory windows for light flow across the open floor plan
  • Introduced stone to the fireplaces to connect to the home's surroundings
  • Clean modern aesthetic yet with some added details so it wasn't stark
  • The furniture selections seem to float in each room with slender legs and great lines, and warm, natural tones which do not obstruct the views
  • A carriage house recreation room that has a bright, modern interpretation of the structure
  • Added a floating staircase which runs diagonally across the clerestory windows that overlook the landscaping and provides a setting which changes with each season

Exterior Solutions

  • More large glass windows to bring in the natural light and connection to the natural environment
  • Raised the center section of the house up and created glass walls on both sides, for a tall, light and airy entry
  • Preserved the woodland theme, we clad the house in cedar shingles for siding and roofing on the home
  • The property's bridges were also refashioned in cedar posts and mahogany decking
  • The bridges also introduced wire rails to lighten the structure and to provide a view of the surrounding landscape
