Modern Lake House Renovation

Transformation Based On the Original Footprint

We envisioned bright spaces opening the house to connect to the natural environment.

This residence was originally designed by Architect Ken Miller in 1971 as a weekend retreat for stage and screen actors Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. Given its location and current wetland restrictions, it is in fact, a house that could not be built today. Though we were limited to the footprint of the original design, with careful planning and coordination with the Town’s Wetland board, we were able to create the home our clients envisioned. Clerestory windows and interior transoms allow the Owners to fully enjoy natural light and the dramatic seasonal changes of the surrounding woodland. The clean, modern design esthetic is softened by indigenous materials, namely, warm cedar shingles and topstone. See the room-by-room transformation here: Witness the Transformation

Exterior Solutions

  • We used clerestory windows and transoms and in the main residence and recreation room to take advantage of the natural light and to provide a connection to the lake and beautiful woodland setting
  • Raised the center section of the house up and created glass walls on both sides, for a tall, light and airy entry
  • To preserve the woodland theme, we clad the house in cedar siding and roofing shingles
  • The property's bridges were also refashioned in cedar posts and mahogany decking
  • We introduced wire rails in the bridges to lighten the structure and to provide a view of the surrounding landscape
  • Our design provides a view from every room the house

Interior Solutions

  • We removed an existing loft and redesigned that wing of the home with a flat roof and upper level clerestory windows for light flow across the open floor plan. Following the path of the moon across the sky and over the lake, has became a favored pastime for the Owners
  • Stone fireplaces were introduced to connect the home to its environment on the rocky peninsula
  • Clean modern aesthetic was softened with materials native to the woodland setting
  • The furniture selections by Carrie Parker Interiors, float in each room. Slender legs, great lines and warm, natural tones which do not obstruct the views
  • A carriage house recreation room has a bright, modern interpretation of the functional structure
  • The floating staircase runs diagonally across the clerestory windows that overlook the landscaping showcasing a setting which changes with each season
