Lake Front Cape Remodel

Stunning Cape to Lake Cottage Restoration

The existing Cape style home, sat on a spectacular lake front site, yet was in disrepair and could not accommodate the growing family, it also did not take full advantage of the lake views. The clients wished to expand the Kitchen and Basement areas and add some exterior porch space.

This home remodel consisted of two phases. In Phase One the Kitchen was enlarged to allow for an Island, and large doors to a porch to enjoy the water view, and allow the sun and its lake refection off the water, to stream into the light filled space. A Dining area was also added with large windows towards the lake. For the Basement level a Lake front Recreation room and Mudroom were added with new stairs to the Kitchen.

The exterior of the home was restored in a lake cottage style, while also respecting the original Cape. This was achieved by working with materials to match the existing. Items such as fieldstone foundation walls, white clapboard siding and cottage style shutters with Iron hardware and a cedar roof.

Phase Two consisted of a Master Suite addition to the home with and private veranda overlooking the lake. In the Master Bath the original stone foundation was left exposed as a backdrop to the tub. River stones were used in the fully glassed in shower area floor to continue the stone theme. The vanity incorporates windows to view the lake.

Solutions

The entire first floor was remodeled with a transitional, open feel that allowed fluid communication between spaces:

  • To expand the kitchen and create a wall of glass, we removed a supporting wall and reinforced the ceiling with steel beams.
  • We removed the walls to the formal dining room and expanded the kitchen to include a sitting area
  • A wall of glass was added opposite the kitchen counters, calling attention to the outside and creating a bright and airy setting.
  • To transform the entertainment area into a clean, open space with rooms that blend into each other, we added a covered porch with automatic screens adjacent to the kitchen/dining area.

The Home Monthly

Asked about his approach to design, Ralph said, “When it comes to renovations, we try to make it look as if we’d never been there. We can change the total look of a house or enhance what was there in a way that looks organic, which is what we did at the Rodgers’.”;
